Below is a breakdown of the exact products I use in my own professional pest control business here in Canyon Lake, TX. I’ve tested these in the field for years, and they are the most effective options for our specific Texas Hill Country environment.

Demand CS is professional insecticide commonly used by pest control companies. It uses a micro-encapsulated formula that helps the insecticide last longer on treated surfaces.

Because of this formulation, Demand CS often provides longer residual control than many standard insecticides. Based on my professional experience, it will hold up 60-90 days outdoors, and longer indoors.

It is highly effective against scorpions, spiders, centipedes, wasps, fleas, and many other insects.  Micro-encapsulated formula won’t break down in 100 degree Texas heat, giving you a full 90-day residual.

Although it is more expensive than Bifen I/T, many professionals prefer Demand CS when longer lasting treatments are needed.

Why professionals use Demand CS

Bifen I/T is one of the most widely used insecticides in the professional pest control industry. It contains the active ingredient bifenthrin and is labeled to control more than 75 different pests including ants, spiders, fleas, and roaches.

Many pest control companies use Bifen I/T as a perimeter treatment around the outside of homes. When applied around the foundation and entry points, it helps prevent pests from entering the home.  It does not hold up in hot environments as long as Demand CS though, usually less than 60 days, and sometimes less than 30 days.

Why Bifen IT is a good budget option

• Much cheaper than most professional insecticides
• Controls ants, spiders, fleas, ticks, and roaches
• Widely used for exterior perimeter treatments
• Easy to mix and apply with a pump sprayer

Bifen I/T is also relatively affordable compared to many other professional insecticides, which makes it a popular choice for homeowners who want professional results.

While Bifen IT does not last quite as long as Demand CS, it is a much more affordable option for routine perimeter treatments.

Pro Tip from a Pest Control Technician: Most pest problems around homes start outside. Treating the perimeter of the foundation and nearby landscaping with a residual insecticide every few months will prevent many common pests from entering the house.

Talstar Xtra Granules are commonly used by pest control professionals to treat lawns and outdoor areas for pests like fire ants, fleas, ticks, and other insects.

The reason I prefer Talstar Xtra over standard big-box granules is the Verge Technology. Most homeowners don’t realize that cheaper granules often just sit on top of the mulch or grass thatch. Talstar’s uniform granules are engineered to dissolve almost instantly when watered in, allowing the active ingredient to reach the actual soil profile where pests like scorpions and fire ants are actually living. In our rocky Hill Country soil, that penetration is the difference between a one-week fix and a three-month solution. 

The granules are typically spread across the lawn using a broadcast spreader and then watered in so the insecticide reaches the soil where pests live.

These granules are especially useful for treating larger yards where liquid sprays may not be practical, or can be used in in addition to yard liquid sprays.

For homeowners dealing with outdoor pest problems, granular insecticides are often one of the most effective solutions. They are easy to apply and work in conjunction with liquid sprays. I spread granules 8-10 feet around the foundation in grass and flower beds to provide protection against insects that live in the soil and mulch areas, like: cockroaches, roly polies, millipedes, chinch bugs.

Bifen L/P Granules are the generic version of Talstar Xtra and are widely used by pest control technicians as a more affordable yard treatment. They contain the same active ingredient (bifenthrin) but at a slightly lower concentration.

Many pest control professionals combine Bifen L/P with Talstar Xtra to extend coverage when treating larger yards. This allows you to maintain effective insect control while reducing the overall cost of treatment.

These granules work well for controlling pests like ants, fleas, ticks, and other insects in lawns and landscaped areas.

Pro Tip from a Pest Control Technician: Spread granules evenly across the yard and water them in with a sprinkler or hose to activate the insecticide in the soil.

EcoVia EC is a botanical insecticide made from plant-based oils and is often used by pest control companies when homeowners request a more natural treatment option.

EcoVia EC can be used to control pests such as fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and wasps. It is commonly applied around the exterior of homes and in outdoor areas where pests are active.  I use it to knock down wasps very quickly. Once the essential oils get on them, they are no longer interested in coming after you!

EcoVia EC has a very strong essential oil smell, so I do not recommend using it indoors.  It is not unpleasant but is very strong.

While natural insecticides may require more frequent applications than traditional pesticides, they can still be effective for many common household pests.

Advion ant bait arenas are one of the most effective ant control products available to homeowners. Most homeowners make the mistake of spraying ants they see inside. All that does is tell the colony to move into the walls.

I use Advion Ant Gel Arenas because they are clean and effective. The bait is contained, so you don’t have gel smears on your baseboards. The active ingredient, Indoxacarb, is ‘bio-activated,’ meaning it only turns into an insecticide once the ant eats it. This allows the ants to get back to the nest and share the bait with the rest of the colony before they die off.

This slow-acting process helps eliminate the entire colony rather than just killing individual ants that are visible.

Because the bait stations are pre-filled and ready to use, they are also very easy for homeowners to place around the home.

I consider Maxforce Complete a staple in any professional kit because it contains a mix of proteins, fats, and sugars. This is critical because ants change their dietary needs throughout the year; if you only use a sugar bait and they are looking for protein, they’ll ignore it. Maxforce covers all the bases. It’s especially effective in our area for large-headed ants and crickets that try to invade the perimeter during the dry Texas summers. It’s weather-resistant and holds up much longer than standard store-bought granules.

Maxforce Complete Granular Bait is highly effective against many different insects like ants, silverfish, roaches.  It can be sprinkled around the exterior of the home or placed in bait trays inside the home in areas ants or silverfish are seen.  It is a good overall product that is already budget-friendly.

Living in the Hill Country, fire ants aren’t just a nuisance—they are a constant battle. Most homeowners make the mistake of ‘mound drenching’ with a garden hose, which just causes the colony to move five feet over. For true elimination, you have to use a professional-grade bait that the workers will carry to the queen.

Advion Fire Ant Bait is my top recommendation for a reason. It is incredibly fast-acting, often providing total colony control in 24 to 72 hours. Unlike many baits that take weeks to work, Advion targets the queen quickly. It’s highly attractive to fire ants even when other food sources are available. Extinguish Plus has the same ingredients as Amdro granules, but effective and used by professionals.

Pro Tip: “The best time to apply Extinguish Plus is when the ground is dry and the ants are active—usually when soil temps are between 70°F and 90°F. If the ground is soaking wet from a Hill Country thunderstorm, wait 24 hours. You want the workers to find the bait before it gets mushy.”

Niban is my top choice for the large ‘Water Bugs’ and ‘Palmetto Bugs’ (American and Smokey Brown Roaches) that live in our Texas mulch beds and crawl spaces. It is a weather-resistant bait that won’t wash away in a Hill Country thunderstorm. Note: This is specifically for outdoor perimeter roaches. If you are dealing with small, fast-breeding German Roaches inside your kitchen or bathroom, you need a specialized gel bait like Vendetta Plus (listed below), as granular baits like Niban aren’t designed for indoor German roach behavior.

Niban is a highly effective granular bait that is easy to apply and attractive to roaches, ants, crickets, silverfish, carpenter ants and other insects. The shaker bottle comes ready to go, so no granule spreader is needed. Just sprinkle around the foundation or place it into bait trays indoors in places like cabinets or pantries, where insects are seen. It is already budget-friendly and can be a good substitute for other granules if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative.

When I’m dealing with German Roaches inside a kitchen, Vendetta Plus is my first choice. These roaches are ‘pro’ level breeders, so you can’t just spray them with Raid and hope for the best. That actually makes the problem worse by scattering them into the walls.

I use Vendetta Plus because it has an IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) built right in. Think of it like birth control for roaches—it stops the young ones from ever being able to lay eggs. The roaches eat the bait, take it back to their hiding spots, and spread it to the rest of the colony through their droppings.

Pro Tip: Don’t put down big globs. I place tiny dots (about the size of a pen tip) in cracks, crevices, and under cabinet hinges. This mimics how they naturally forage and ensures they actually eat the bait instead of walking around it.

 

“In the Texas Hill Country, Onslaught Fastcap is the industry standard for scorpions. Most products on the market don’t even dent a scorpion’s armor, but Fastcap contains Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO), which flushes them out and knocks them down fast.

My Professional Take: I use this for perimeter treatments around foundations and rock landscaping. However, if you have a heavy infestation, don’t rely on a ‘one and done’ spray. Scorpions are incredibly tough; even with professional-grade chemicals, many of my customers in high-activity areas require monthly service to keep them under control. If you’re seeing them inside your home regularly, it’s time to call in a professional for a comprehensive Scorpion Control plan.”

“Most insecticidal dusts get ruined the moment they get wet. Delta Dust is different because it’s completely waterproof. I use this specifically for ‘weep holes’ in brick homes, wall voids, and electrical outlets where spiders and scorpions love to hide. Since it doesn’t clump up in the humidity, it stays active for up to 8 months. A little bit goes a long way—you just need a light coating inside those hiding spots to create a long-lasting barrier.”

Professional pest control companies use concentrated insecticides like Demand CS and Onslaught FastCap because they are micro-encapsulated. This means the chemical is “time-released” and doesn’t break down as fast in the high humidity and heat we deal with here in the Hill Country.

Yes, provided you read and follow the label exactly. In the pest control industry, “The Label is the Law.” Always keep children and pets away from treated areas until the product has completely dried.

For Texas scorpions, Onslaught FastCap is the gold standard. It’s specifically formulated to penetrate the thick exoskeleton of a bark scorpion, whereas standard hardware store sprays usually just make them run faster.
