Experience matters when you are protecting the smallest members of the family. Over the last 30 years here in Canyon Lake, I’ve helped countless parents prepare their homes for a new baby. I’ve learned exactly where these “ninjas” like to hide and, more importantly, how to stop them without over-treating the inside of your home. My goal is to use my decades of field experience to create a “no-fly zone” around your nursery so you can breathe easier.
The “Parent Panic” is Real
One of the most common calls I get is from a frantic parent who just found a scorpion near a changing table or a crib. In the Hill Country, scorpions are excellent climbers and can squeeze through a gap the thickness of a credit card. When it comes to your child’s room, my strategy isn’t about “spraying everything in sight”—it’s about prevention and common-sense safety.
The “Outside-In” Strategy
My approach is simple: If I do my job perfectly on the exterior, I rarely have to use any product on the inside of that room.
The Perimeter Shield: I focus on a heavy-duty barrier around the foundation to stop scorpions at the ground level.
The “Highways”: Scorpions love our Hill Country oaks. I treat the entry points near the roofline to prevent them from dropping onto the house and finding their way into attic vents or windows.
The “Moat” Effect: I always advise parents to pull the crib a few inches away from the wall. Scorpions are great climbers, but they can’t jump. Creating that small gap of air can prevent a “ninja” from climbing straight from the wall into the bedding.
My Number One Safety Tool: Glue Boards
Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. In a nursery, I am a huge believer in glue boards.
I place these strategically under the crib and behind furniture where little hands can’t reach. Glue boards are the safest form of pest control because they don’t involve any airborne product. Plus, they act as a “warning system”—if we see a scorpion on a board, we know exactly where they are trying to enter, and we can adjust our exterior defense accordingly.
Expert Tip: Glue boards aren’t just for scorpions. They are actually the most effective way to monitor and catch the various hunters we have in the Hill Country. For more on how to use these to protect your home, check out my Spider Control page.
What Parents Can Do Today
Before I even arrive for a service call, there are a few things you can do:
Seal the Gaps: Check the weather stripping on the nursery window. If light can get through, a scorpion can get through.
Clear the Perimeter: Keep toys, boxes, and leaf litter at least two feet away from the exterior wall of the nursery.
Sticky Traps: Pick up some high-quality glue boards and place them in the corners of the room or under the crib.
Peace of Mind for Hill Country Families
You shouldn’t have to worry about “uninvited guests” when you’re putting your baby down for a nap. By using a veteran with 30 years of local experience, you aren’t just getting a “bug guy”—you’re getting a strategy designed to protect what matters most.
